Tether's Freeze Function: How Often is It Used and What Does it Mean for You?

On August 24, 2026, 20 Ethereum addresses were frozen within 84 seconds by Tether, the issuer of USDT stablecoin. This was not an isolated incident, but rather part of a larger pattern that has raised questions about the reach of stablecoin issuers over users who do not have contractual relationships with them.

The lawsuit filed on August 31, 2026, with the US District Court for the Southern District of New York claims that Tether froze approximately 42.4 million USDT across ten Ethereum addresses at the informal request of an investigator on October 30, 2025, before receiving a court order to do so on February 19, 2026.

Our analysis of the USDT contract event logs reveals that this is not an isolated incident. In fact, we found that freezes usually arrive in batches and rarely occur one at a time over the course of a day. Within our measured period, there were 32 freezes against only a single reversal, suggesting that once frozen, it can be difficult to have your account unfrozen.
