Tether's Gold-Backed Token XAUt Secures Sharia Compliance Certification
Tether's gold-backed token XAUt has secured Sharia compliance certification from Amanah Advisors. This move paves the way for Islamic financial institutions and investors to access XAUt, which represents one troy ounce of physical gold stored in Swiss vaults.
The certificate was issued after an evaluation found that XAUt's structure aligns with fundamental principles of Islamic finance, including being fully backed by physical gold, not involving interest or leverage, and maintaining transparent reserves. Tether anticipates the certification will facilitate adoption in markets where Islamic finance is prominent, specifically naming the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, South Asia, and parts of Africa.
Tether's XAUt has been growing in popularity, with its on-chain asset value rising from approximately $700 million in July 2025 to about $2.5 billion. The token's reserve report as of March 31 shows it was backed by over 707,000 troy ounces of physical gold, valued at more than $3.3 billion.
