Tether's latest financial report has left many in the crypto community scratching their heads. The stablecoin issuer posted a net operating profit of $1.5 billion for Q2 2026, but its comprehensive financial result shows a significant loss.

The company's excess reserves dropped by about 50% during the quarter, from $8.23 billion to $4.11 billion. This reduction in reserves is concerning for Tether's business model, which relies on maintaining a sufficient buffer above liabilities to USDT holders.

Tether's net operating profit excludes unrealized gains or losses, but its comprehensive financial result includes these factors. The latter shows a first-half 2026 result of approximately negative $3.17 billion, implying an overall Q2 loss exceeding $4 billion when combined with the Q1 profit.
