Tether's Uruguay Mining Project Grounded Amid Contract Dispute
Tether, a prominent stablecoin issuer, has put on hold a nearly $120 million Bitcoin mining project in Uruguay. The move comes as part of Tether's expansion plans for Bitcoin mining operations in South America.
The contract dispute between Tether and Uruguay's state-owned electricity company, UTE, led to the halt of the project. The disagreement centered around how much electricity was supposed to be supplied to the facilities. Tether interpreted the contract as allowing for higher capacity if demand increased, while UTE saw it as an upper limit.
Despite negotiations to modify the contract terms, no agreement could be reached after Tether representatives failed to attend a meeting to sign the amended contract. As a result, the project was suspended.
