Tether's Volume Surge Masks Reality: A Closer Look at Crypto Settlement Activity
Tether's daily trading volume has surpassed Bitcoin's on many exchanges, but this doesn't necessarily mean that Tether is the more popular or valuable asset.
The reason for this disparity lies in the way exchange data is reported. Most crypto trading pairs are quoted against USDT rather than dollars, so every trade involving USDT gets counted as USDT volume, even if it's just a medium of exchange. This means that Tether's high volume is largely driven by its use as a settlement currency.
Adjusted volume figures, which strip out bot traffic and other non-economic activity, paint a different picture. According to Visa's onchain analytics dashboard, the adjusted stablecoin transaction volume totaled $8.82 trillion in the first half of 2026, with USDC accounting for roughly 70% of that figure.
This disparity highlights the importance of looking beyond raw volume figures when evaluating market activity. A token's volume can be inflated by various mechanisms, including bot traffic and wash trading. Analysts should compare volume to market capitalization instead, using a turnover ratio to gauge interest in a particular asset.
