Texas Data Center Audit May Not Disrupt Approved Bitcoin Miners
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to audit data center projects seeking grid interconnection. This move aims to address public concerns about the rapid expansion of data centers in the state, but it may not significantly impact Bitcoin mining operations already approved for electric capacity.
Bernstein analysts argue that most Texas-based Bitcoin miners are insulated from the potential disruptions caused by the audit and subsequent approval constraints. The majority of these miners have contracts for approved electric capacity, which will shield them from the effects of the policy shift.
The analysts pointed out that while existing mining operations may not be significantly affected, the audit could still alter the investment landscape for data centers. According to Bernstein, the process 'throttles' speculative pipeline activity and increases the value of genuine sites with development history and approved power arrangements.
Specifically, Bernstein highlighted CleanSpark, Cipher Digital, and Core Scientific as potentially more exposed if future grid-expansion approvals face additional political resistance. These companies may struggle to secure new or expanded projects due to the tightened approval process.
