Texas Emerges as Hub for AI and Bitcoin Infrastructure
Galaxy Digital and MARA Holdings have accelerated their expansion into Texas's booming data center market, snapping up massive sites to build out AI and Bitcoin infrastructure. The two companies announced their plans on the same day as Meta Platforms revealed a $14 billion AI data center project in El Paso, Texas.
Galaxy Digital purchased a 500-acre site in McGregor, Texas, which will be developed into its second AI and high-performance computing (HPC) data center campus. The initial phase of development will have an initial power capacity of 74 megawatts, with plans to scale up capacity in subsequent phases.
MARA Holdings signed an agreement to acquire a 1,200-acre site in Matagorda County, Texas, which can support up to 2 gigawatts of power capacity. The site will be developed as a hybrid infrastructure campus capable of accommodating both AI/HPC workloads and Bitcoin mining.
The investments are seen as strategic moves targeting future computing demand in AI and HPC, extending beyond simple mining facility expansion. This trend aligns with the industry's recent shift towards broader scope for Bitcoin mining companies, leveraging their large-scale power infrastructure and data center operational expertise to expand into the AI market.
