Thai SEC Proposes Retail Access to Regulated Overseas Crypto Derivatives
The Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has proposed allowing retail investors to trade regulated overseas crypto derivatives through intermediaries. The proposed products would be similar to those traded domestically, including underlying assets, maturity dates, leverage, and settlement methods. However, they must be traded on exchanges that use central counterparty clearing and are supervised by international regulatory or exchange organizations.
The SEC notes that institutional investors have the ability to assess and manage complex and high-risk products, which is why retail access will only be available for products that meet these conditions. Currently, intermediaries can provide related services to retail and high net worth clients if overseas derivatives are similar to domestic ones. The proposed rule aims to address the differences in structure and risk levels of overseas crypto derivatives.
The consultation period will run until September 30, and the SEC has not announced a date for implementing any potential revisions.
