Thailand Approves Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC for Regulated Trading
Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC stablecoins for trading on regulated exchanges. This decision, made after a public consultation in February, will take effect on March 16.
The approval of these two large-cap stablecoins is significant as it expands Thailand's list of approved cryptocurrencies. With this move, the country continues to push for wider cryptocurrency adoption and sets a strong precedent for other nations in Southeast Asia to follow.
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino expressed his commitment to providing Thai users with secure and reliable stablecoin services, emphasizing the company's focus on improving its offerings in the Thai market. The approval of USDT and USDC is expected to increase their use in Thailand's financial systems, contributing to the broader adoption of cryptocurrencies.
Stablecoins like USDT and USDC offer cheaper and faster alternatives to traditional remittance systems. In Sub-Saharan Africa, for instance, using stablecoins can cost up to 60% less than traditional methods. With this approval, Thailand is positioning itself as a leader in Southeast Asia's crypto space.
