Thailand SEC Opens Consultation on Retail Access to Overseas Crypto Derivatives
Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is seeking public input on proposed rules that would allow retail investors to access overseas crypto derivatives through intermediaries. The framework, open for feedback until September 30, targets products with specific conditions, including clearing through a central counterparty and operating under a recognized international regulatory or exchange organization.
Currently, rules in Thailand permit intermediaries to offer retail clients access to overseas derivatives when those products resemble ones traded domestically. However, the SEC argues that existing regulations are insufficient for crypto derivatives due to their varied risk profiles and structures.
The proposal aims to formalize crypto derivatives within Thailand's regulated capital markets, a move that aligns with the country's broader regulatory push in the digital asset space. The public consultation period will inform potential amendments to the rules, which have not yet been announced.
