Thailand SEC Proposes Retail Access to Overseas Crypto Derivatives
Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is taking steps to allow retail investors access to certain digital asset derivatives traded overseas. The proposal, which has been open for consultation until September 30, would enable intermediaries to facilitate retail access to eligible products that resemble those traded in Thailand.
The proposed conditions include requirements that the underlying assets, maturity, leverage, and settlement methods of the products must be similar to those traded domestically. Additionally, the exchange where the product trades must use a central counterparty for clearing and be overseen by a regulator belonging to specified international groups.
According to the SEC, institutions are better equipped to assess and manage complex and high-risk products, which could only be offered to them if they do not meet these conditions. The regulator has been discussing potential contract specifications with the Thailand Futures Exchange.
