The Hidden Risks and Complexities of Real-World Asset Tokens
The concept of real-world asset tokens has gained significant attention in recent times. However, there's more to it than meets the eye. Most explanations stop at highlighting the potential benefits and overlook the complexities involved.
At its core, a real-world asset token is a blockchain representation of an off-chain asset. But owning the token doesn't automatically mean owning the underlying asset. The legal framework matters greatly in determining the rights and risks associated with these tokens.
Different asset classes are tokenized in distinct ways, each carrying varying risk profiles. For instance, tokenized government securities have been developed to a certain extent, with products like BlackRock's BUIDL fund and Franklin Templeton's BENJI token holding actual US Treasury bills or money market instruments inside regulated fund structures.
However, other asset classes such as private credit, real estate, commodities, and equities face unique challenges. Tokenized private credit is the fastest-growing category but also comes with a higher default risk due to illiquid underlying loans. Real estate tokenization presents its own set of problems, including jurisdiction-specific issues and difficulty in liquidating quickly.
Newer chains like Plume are trying to solve these complexities by building infrastructure that treats RWA mechanics as native features. But this also introduces concentration risks, where if the chain fails or the issuer goes offline, token holders may find their legal claim harder to enforce than they assumed.
