The9's Net Income Soars on Token Gains, but Future Performance Remains Conditional
The9, a Nasdaq-listed company, reported a net income of $32.4 million in its second-quarter earnings. This figure is significantly higher than the first quarter's net income of $22.6 million, marking a growth rate of over 39%. However, what's striking about this result is that it was largely driven by the fair-value gain on The9's 9BIT token holdings.
The company's operating loss for the quarter stood at $13.4 million, which is actually higher than the first quarter's loss. Revenue for the period was a mere $712,000, and cryptocurrency-mining revenue was zero. In contrast, the fair-value gain on 9BIT tokens amounted to $47.2 million, while an additional $11.1 million came from cryptocurrency rewards.
The combination of these two items pushed The9's net income far above its operating result. This accounting treatment allows The9 to separate the token contribution from its operating performance, which is significant given that the token income is essentially decoupled from the company's actual business operations.
