Tight Senate Races Emerge Ahead of Midterm Elections

According to recent polls, Republicans may struggle to maintain their slim majority in the Senate during the 2026 midterm elections. The Cook Political Report has identified five Republican-held seats as toss-ups, with only one located in a state where President Donald Trump lost his re-election bid in 2024.

In Texas, Democratic nominee James Talarico is currently leading Republican Ken Paxton by three percentage points, according to a University of Texas/Texas Politics Project survey. This tight race has been fueled by infighting within the GOP and controversy surrounding Talarico's past comments on gender and religion.

Other key Senate races include Alaska, where Democratic former Representative Mary Peltola is vying to unseat Republican Senator Dan Sullivan. A primary test for the general election, Peltola edged out Sullivan by five points. Iowa and Maine are also toss-up states, with polls showing a tight competition between Republican and Democratic candidates.

Michigan and Ohio are also crucial battlegrounds, with former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown running against Republican Senator John Husted in the latter state. A Fox News poll shows Husted trailing Brown by eight points, while 33% of respondents view him as too close to Trump.
