TikTok Faces EU Fine Over Minors' Data Protection
The European Union has found TikTok to be in violation of privacy rules designed to protect minors. This determination could result in another significant financial penalty for the ByteDance-owned platform.
This case falls under the Digital Services Act, a regulatory framework that governs digital platforms in the EU. The act focuses on content moderation, algorithmic transparency, and protections for minors.
TikTok has already faced substantial fines related to GDPR violations and data transfers to China. The company was hit with a €345 million fine by Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner in September 2023 for allowing accounts from users under 13 without adequate safeguards. A separate €530 million fine, related to data transfers to China, was upheld by the Irish High Court in 2026.
TikTok has been given the opportunity to respond to these preliminary findings. No specific fine has been determined at this stage.
