TikTok's Double Standard: Banning Reform Voices While Profiting from Black-Market Gambling Ads
TikTok has faced criticism for banning an ethical gambling advocate while allowing promotions for crypto casinos and unlicensed tipsters to proliferate on its platform.
Jim Curry, a prominent advocate for safer gambling practices, had his account permanently banned after discussing lottery compliance and responsible gaming on his podcast. However, the ban was lifted after Curry posted a protest on LinkedIn, highlighting the disparity between TikTok's moderation policies and its acceptance of unlicensed gambling ads.
Curry pointed out that the platform allows videos promoting operators such as Stake and Rainbet to circulate freely, despite being blocked in some countries. He noted that these promotions often target teenagers and lack age filters.
The issue extends beyond TikTok, with Meta generating $16 billion annually from scam and illegal gambling ads, and imposing revenue guardrails limiting anti-scam actions to 0.15% of total revenue.
