Tiny Transfers Trigger Compliance Checks at Kraken
A recent incident at Kraken highlights a new operational risk for traders in the crypto space. The exchange temporarily restricted some customer accounts after nearly 12,000 small crypto transfers were sent between August 17 and 24 from a wallet linked to the sanctioned exchange HTX.
According to Kraken, the activity was described as a 'dust attack', designed to spread sanctioned funds across other platforms and trigger compliance checks. The tiny transfers, worth only a few cents or dollars each, were enough to trigger a compliance review at the exchange.
For active traders, even a temporary restriction can create a serious problem. A locked account can prevent someone from entering a trade, closing a position, or responding to a sudden liquidation event during a volatile market.
