Tlaib's Crypto Investments Through ETFs Raise Questions on Policy and Practice
Rep. Rashida Tlaib's financial disclosure has highlighted her investments in Bitcoin and Ethereum through exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The Michigan Democrat reported up to $30,000 in the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) across two Schwab retirement accounts and as much as $15,000 in the Grayscale Ethereum Staking Mini ETF (ETH) in her Roth IRA.
The holdings are notable because Tlaib voted against the CLARITY Act, a major piece of crypto market-structure legislation, when it passed the House in July 2025. In October 2025, she co-sponsored the Ban Crypto Corruption Resolution, which aims to ban the use of public office for personal enrichment through cryptocurrency ventures.
Tlaib's disclosure shows IBIT in both her Schwab Rollover Traditional IRA and Schwab Roth Contributory IRA, with each position valued between $1,001 and $15,000. The purchases occurred on April 28 and May 29, 2025, alongside rollovers of two employer retirement plans.
The use of ETFs to gain crypto exposure is becoming increasingly mainstream, as seen in the popularity of BlackRock's IBIT, which has attracted substantial capital and has almost $59 billion in assets. The fund had a significant share of the buying in U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs last week, with roughly $1.9 billion pulled in.
Tlaib's Roth IRA also held the Grayscale Ethereum Staking Mini ETF, giving her exposure to Ethereum through the fund that holds Ether and earns staking rewards. The fund had nearly $2.9 billion in assets.
