TMTG Abandons Cryptocurrency Ambitions Amidst Growing Scrutiny
Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) has scaled back its cryptocurrency ambitions under acting CEO Kevin McGurn. The company is now focusing on its core media and data businesses, abandoning plans to develop and run various cryptocurrency and financial products.
The Trump Media Group CRO Strategy, which aimed to create a publicly traded company devoted to purchasing and staking Crypto.com's CRO token, has been canceled along with TMTG and Crypto.com. The companies cited 'prevailing market conditions' and 'shifting business and stakeholder priorities' as reasons for the change.
McGurn noted that the company wanted to get focused, implying a desire to simplify its approach and concentrate resources on top priorities. This decision coincided with growing scrutiny around President Trump's cryptocurrency ventures, including the Official Trump (TRUMP) memecoin, which reportedly lost over $3.81 billion in value after crashing by 98%.
TMTG has also reduced its exposure to Bitcoin, selling additional BTC holdings resulting in losses of up to $555 million. The company's decision to shift towards a distribution and partnership model, where it will let companies like Crypto.com offer crypto products while focusing on media, audience, and data businesses, suggests that TMTG is not giving up on cryptocurrency entirely.
