TMTG Ditches Crypto.com Agreements for TAE Merger
Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) has abandoned two agreements with Crypto.com, including a proposed $6.4 billion CRO token treasury, to focus on its merger with energy company TAE. The move follows prevailing market conditions and shifting business priorities, according to statements from both parties.
TMTG's interim CEO Kevin McGurn cited competitive dynamics as the main reason for the strategic rollback, rather than regulatory concerns tied to the administration's oversight of the crypto industry.
The abandoned agreements aimed to build a $6.4 billion treasury of CRO tokens and add prediction markets to the Truth Social platform. The companies involved in the deal - TMTG, Crypto.com, and special purpose acquisition company Yorkville Acquisition Corp - attributed the dissolution to 'prevailing market conditions and shifting business and stakeholder priorities.'
McGurn's statement contradicts ongoing political scrutiny of Trump's crypto ties, with lawmakers seeking ethics provisions in crypto market structure legislation. The proposed bill aims to reduce potential conflicts of interest involving the Trump family and its digital asset investments.
