Tokenization Stocks Tumble on SEC Delay

Share

Tokenization-related stocks took a hit on Friday as another delay to a long-awaited U.S. regulatory initiative weighed on investor sentiment towards the industry's expansion into traditional securities.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was set to further delay its anticipated 'innovation exemption', which is expected to make it easier for companies to offer trading in tokenized securities, according to CoinDesk's report late Thursday.

This news sent stocks like Bullish BLSH ($24.71), Figure (FIGR), Coinbase COIN ($150.21), and Circle CRCL ($72.50) plummeting, with some experiencing losses of up to 9% in early trading.

Securitize (SECZ) initially fell 5%, but managed to stabilize after Thursday's 27% plunge on missing earnings estimates.

Owen Lau, managing director and senior analyst at Clear Street, described the setback as a 'speed bump' for U.S. tokenization, stating that it doesn't necessarily change the longer-term story.
