Tokenization Supercycle Has Only Just Begun, Says Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev says that tokenization is still in its early stages and could lead to significant changes in financial markets. He believes that moving traditional assets onto blockchain infrastructure will be one of the most consequential developments in decades.
Tenev argues that tokenization has the potential to rebuild the underlying infrastructure of asset ownership, enabling continuous markets, efficient settlement, and broader access to traditionally difficult-to-trade assets. He sees this as an opportunity to move beyond simply putting conventional stocks on a blockchain.
Robinhood is already building out its own tokenization infrastructure, offering over 2,000 stock tokens to eligible customers in the European Union and European Economic Area. The company has also launched the public testnet for Robinhood Chain, an Ethereum Layer 2 network designed for financial applications and tokenized real-world assets.
Tenev warns that U.S. regulators need to establish a clearer framework for tokenized equities, as the country risks falling behind markets where blockchain-based versions of traditional securities are already available.
