Tokenized Stocks Hit a Speed Bump: Data Plumbing Crisis

Securitize made headlines recently when it listed its tokenized stock on the New York Stock Exchange. As a pioneer in tokenization, this move brought attention to the growing trend of representing real-world assets as digital tokens on blockchain networks. The company tokenized its own stock, bringing SECZ to Solana and Avalanche.

This development has significant implications for Wall Street and the broader financial industry. Tokenization could open up new opportunities for capital markets, allowing for faster settlements, instant use of assets in decentralized protocols, and more. However, this transition comes with challenges, particularly when it comes to data infrastructure.

The tokenized stock trades continuously, but most data providers freeze equity price feeds outside traditional market hours. This can lead to a scenario where the token's value is not accurately reflected, potentially causing issues for lending desks, collateral valuation, and even liquidation events. To mitigate this risk, a more robust data infrastructure is needed.

Securitize is working with NYSE on a 24/7 trading platform, but other tokenized assets like xStocks on Solana or the tokenized GOOGL, AAPL, and NVDA on Robinhood Chain already operate continuously. Perpetuals like TSLA on Hyperliquid also trade around the clock, although they offer indirect exposure to underlying assets.

The potential benefits of tokenization are vast, with $35B worth of transactions generated in just 12 months and 200,000 unique holders. However, getting the data plumbing right is crucial for this transition to succeed. As Larry Fink of BlackRock noted, 'I do believe we're just at the beginning of the tokenization of all assets.'
