Tokenized Stocks Meet Memecoins: Unconventional Pairings Shake Up DeFi
The latest trend in decentralized finance (DeFi) is pairing tokenized stocks against memecoins, a move that has resulted in unconventional price movements. The HIMS token, which tracks shares of telehealth company Hims & Hers listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), was paired with the memecoin BONER on Robinhood Chain.
The pairing led to an imbalance in the liquidity pool, causing the price of HIMS to surge to $132.64, more than four times its NYSE closing price of $28.84. This phenomenon highlights the unique opportunities and risks presented by tokenized stocks in DeFi markets.
According to Thomas Probst, a research analyst at Kaiko, this development effectively turns listed stocks into 'composable DeFi assets at an unprecedented scale.' The use of automated market makers (AMMs) enables traders to swap between tokens without traditional order books or matching buyers.
While the BONER/HIMS pairing may seem unusual, it demonstrates the flexibility and potential of tokenized stocks in DeFi. As Reid Noch, vice president of US equity market structure and electronic trading at TD Securities, notes, AMMs remain 'very novel when compared to traditional markets.'
