Tokenized Stocks Surge for Circle Internet Group
Circle Internet Group's tokenized stocks have gained significant traction in the market, adding $48 million in market capitalization over the past week. The growth was spread across three platforms: CRCLon issued by Ondo Finance, which led with $17.1 million; Binance's bStocks variant, CRCLb, which added $16.2 million; and CRCLx built on the xStocks platform by Backed, contributing $14.3 million.
Tokenized equities work like wrappers around real shares, with each token backed 1:1 by an underlying share of CRCL held with a regulated custodian. Buyers don't own the stock directly; they own a digital claim on it, which trades on blockchain rails instead of through a traditional brokerage.
The appeal of tokenized equities lies in their ability to offer fractional ownership and near-instant settlement on a blockchain that never closes, bypassing traditional barriers faced by investors outside the US. However, regulatory uncertainty remains a significant variable, with some regulators taking a permissive approach while others haven't weighed in at all.
