Tom Lee Sees Bullish Future for Crypto Amid Tokenization Hopes
Tom Lee, a Wall Street strategist and chair of BitMine Immersion Technologies, is predicting that the next 12 months will be 'really bullish' for cryptocurrency. He has reason to hope this will be the case, as his company's ether holdings are about $5 billion underwater.
The worst may already be over for crypto markets, according to Lee. The largest liquidation event in crypto history occurred on October 10 last year, when a threat of 100% tariffs on China triggered a massive sell-off. Over $19 billion in leveraged bets vanished in a single day, taking the borrowed money with it.
Lee believes that prices have not yet caught up to the bottom of crypto's four-year cycle, which is expected to occur next month. Bitcoin (BTC) is currently trading near $77,315, roughly 39% below its record high above $126,000, set just before the crash. Ether has added 3.2% in 24 hours to about $2,533.
Lee's bigger idea is tokenization, which involves moving stocks, bonds, and funds onto blockchains instead of traditional back-office systems. He estimates that if even a small percentage of assets are shifted onto chain, it could generate significant income, up to $1.1 trillion per year, valued as a normal business.
However, not everyone shares Lee's optimism. Theo chief investment officer Iggy Ioppe calls tokenization 'tokenization theater' and notes that the actual amount of assets on chain is minimal, with just $60 billion (0.06% of 1% of the number Lee is pricing) as of May 31.
