Tong Warns Connecticut Residents of Unregulated Offshore Crypto Exchanges
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong issued a warning to residents about unregulated offshore decentralized finance (DeFi) cryptocurrency exchanges. These platforms, including GMX, Gains Network, dYdX, Aevo, Drift Protocol, Vertex Protocol, and Hyperliquid, operate outside of state and federal regulatory frameworks, exposing investors to significant financial losses.
Tong stated that these platforms lure investors with promises of easy access and bigger returns but fail to advertise the lack of consumer protections. He urged residents to research thoroughly before investing, noting that if something goes wrong, investors may be left stranded with little recourse.
The Office of the Attorney General is aware of at least one Connecticut consumer who was deceived into depositing $200,000 into an unregulated DeFi exchange by a person claiming to know them. The consumer is now unable to recover the funds.
