Top 10 Cryptocurrency Rankings: What's Behind the Numbers
Entering the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization can be seen as a significant milestone for a token, but it doesn't automatically mean that the asset has become more valuable or safer. In fact, market cap is a relatively simple calculation of price multiplied by circulating supply.
Crossing into the top 10 can increase visibility and market attention, with financial media devoting more coverage to large-cap assets. This can create a feedback loop where higher market cap pushes an asset further up the rankings.
However, being in the top 10 doesn't guarantee institutional investment or liquidity. Institutional investors care about characteristics such as custody availability, regulatory treatment, and reliable price discovery, which may not be directly related to market capitalization.
A good example of this is Zcash (ZEC), which briefly traded at $1,023 on September 4, 2026, taking its market capitalization to around $17 billion. However, the increase in price was what drove up the market cap, not the other way around.
