Tornado Cash Retrial Delayed Until April 26, 2027

Roman Storm's retrial on charges related to Tornado Cash has been pushed back to April 26, 2027. The Southern District of New York judge, Katherine Polk Failla, adjourned the trial after Roman Storm's lawyers requested a later date. This is more than six months after the initial request for a retrial in October or December this year.

The trial has been ongoing since August 2025, when Storm was convicted of conspiring to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business. A jury deadlocked on conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to violate U.S. sanctions charges, which carry a combined maximum sentence of 40 years. The retrial will now take place in late April 2027.

Storm has argued that the case is not about him, but rather an example set by the Southern District of New York to bring the wider industry into compliance. He pointed out that his lawyers subpoenaed Chainalysis, a blockchain analysis firm, to testify but their witness pleaded the fifth amendment and the jury never heard this evidence.

Storm's case has drawn attention from privacy advocates, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. Buterin described himself as an active user of privacy tools, including those developed by Roman Storm.
