Toyota Finance's Tokenized Bond Revolutionizes Retail Investing
Toyota Finance has launched a tokenized bond that can be purchased directly by retail investors through its Toyota Wallet mobile app. This marks a significant shift in how Toyota raises capital and engages with its customer base, as it allows everyday drivers to buy into corporate debt without the need for brokerage accounts.
The bond, worth 1 billion yen, carries a one-year maturity and offers an annual interest rate of 1.72%. Investors can participate with as little as 100,000 Japanese yen ($676), and the process runs on blockchain infrastructure provided by BOOSTRY, a Japanese security token company.
This move is part of a broader wave of tokenization activity in Japan's financial system, which includes initiatives from Progmat, SBI Global Asset Management, and DigiFT. Toyota Finance's offering blurs the line between a financial instrument and a loyalty product, potentially setting a template for other corporations with large consumer-facing platforms.
