Traders Lose Big as Bitcoin and Ethereum Prices Surge
Crypto markets saw a significant surge in prices on Wednesday, leaving many traders who had bet against Bitcoin and Ethereum's price fall surprised.
The sudden increase in value caught traders off guard, with Bitcoin climbing to nearly $70,000 and Ethereum peaking at over $2,100. This unexpected move resulted in an estimated loss of $1.44 billion for those who had shorted the assets.
According to data from CoinGlass, the biggest liquidation totalled $1.52 billion, with approximately $1.40 billion being attributed to short positions. The swift price increase led to exchanges automatically closing positions that could no longer cover their losses, resulting in significant losses for traders who had bet on falling prices.
The impact of this sudden change was not limited to Bitcoin and Ethereum alone. XRP and Solana also saw gains of over 6%, indicating a wider recovery across major assets.
