Treasury Buyback Expansion Sparks Optimism for Bitcoin's $180K Milestone
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that bond buybacks may exceed $4 billion per operation, doubling the previous limit of $2 billion. This expansion aims to address deteriorating market conditions in the bond sector.
The repurchase program focuses on government securities with 10-30 year maturities and is set to launch on September 9. Bessent cited challenges such as substantial corporate debt issuance and inadequate liquidity in longer-duration Treasury securities as driving factors behind the government's decision to intervene.
As a result, investment strategist Mark Connors believes that Bitcoin could reach $180,000 faster than initially forecasted. He attributes this optimism to declining long-dated yields, which decrease attractive alternatives for capital allocation and potentially benefit Bitcoin.
Connors also mentioned potential regulatory adjustments as accelerants, specifically mentioning modifications to the supplementary leverage ratio, which could enable banks to absorb more government debt and further suppress yield pressures.
