Treasury Buybacks and Crypto Regulation Spark Bitcoin and Gold Rally
The value of Bitcoin and gold skyrocketed this week after a tumultuous few days in financial markets. The sudden surge in both assets can be attributed to various factors, including frantic activity surrounding the bond market and proposed regulation in Washington.
Bitcoin's price had dropped from its January high around $95,000 to below $60,000 by the end of June due to investor skepticism and lack of movement on proposed crypto regulations. However, on Friday, Bitcoin rose above $77,000.
The U.S. Treasury Department's announcement to significantly increase its buybacks of long-term Treasurys on Wednesday sparked a jolt in the market. The move was intended to calm bond markets after a sustained sell-off, but it also raised questions about whether the government is trying to push borrowing costs lower despite inflationary pressures.
The debasement trade, where investors flood into alternative assets such as gold and Bitcoin, gained momentum this week. Gold rose to $4,661 on Friday, up from around $4,000 in June. The value of the U.S. dollar also took a significant downward swoop.
President Trump's call for Congress to pass the crypto-friendly Clarity Act and Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Mike Selig's vow to ease crypto rules further fueled the surge in Bitcoin's price. The CFTC meeting on Thursday examining ways to advance Trump's agenda also contributed to the rally.
