Treasury Forms Task Force to Secure Financial Sector Against Quantum Threat

Share

The US Treasury Department has formed a Quantum-Readiness Task Force to prepare the financial sector for post-quantum cryptography. This move follows President Trump's Executive Order 14412, which directed agencies to bolster defenses against advanced cryptographic attacks.

The task force is organized around three workstreams: sector alignment, vendor readiness, and digital assets and emerging technologies. Sector alignment focuses on coordinating government agencies, banks, and other financial institutions for a simultaneous transition to post-quantum cryptography. Vendor readiness ensures that technology providers selling encryption tools are shipping quantum-resistant products.

The third workstream addresses the risks tied to digital assets, acknowledging that crypto infrastructure faces the same quantum threat as traditional finance. The migration deadlines are concrete: sensitive systems must transition by December 31, 2030, and digital signature systems get an extra year with a deadline of December 31, 2031.
