Treasury GENIUS Act Push Expected to Bolster Dollar, Weaken Gold
The U.S. Treasury is moving forward with implementing the GENIUS Act framework, which aims to bolster the dollar's status as the global reserve currency and strengthen America's position in the cryptocurrency space.
Treasury Secretary Bessent has reaffirmed the department's commitment to rapidly executing this plan, part of a broader effort to enforce the 2025 law that established a comprehensive framework for payment stablecoins.
The GENIUS Act mandates that stablecoins be backed one-for-one by approved reserves such as cash and short-term Treasuries, while also imposing restrictions on interest payments to holders. The Treasury has already proposed rules to ensure state compliance with federal standards, including anti-money laundering and sanctions requirements.
The implementation of the GENIUS Act is seen as a strengthening factor for the U.S. dollar, which could exert downward pressure on gold prices. Market participants appear to be interpreting this move as indicative of a stronger dollar, reflected in shifting odds across several sub-markets related to gold price predictions for August 2026.
