Treasury Intervention Sends Bitcoin and Gold Soaring
Bitcoin and gold had a remarkable week, surging after a slump that saw them drop from their highs in January. Bitcoin, which had fallen to below $60,000 at the end of June, rose above $77,000 on Friday. Gold also rebounded, hitting a high of $4,661 on the same day.
The turnaround came after the Treasury Department announced plans to significantly increase its buybacks of long-term Treasurys on Wednesday. This move calmed bond markets but raised questions about whether the government is trying to push borrowing costs lower despite inflationary pressures. The national debt surpassed a record $40 trillion on the same day, adding to anxiety over inflation.
The value of gold and bitcoin surged as investors moved towards alternative assets, with the 'debasement trade' driving the move. The Treasury's actions negatively affected the money investors could make on U.S. bonds and the dollar, boosting the value of bitcoin instead. This led to a series of forced purchases that added fuel to the rally.
