Treasury Secretary's Bond Buyback Could Send Bitcoin Price Soaring to $1 Trillion
Bitcoin's price has surged over the last week, reaching near $80,000 for the first time since late May. This rally has lifted the combined crypto market by around $500 billion as 'panic' spread through markets.
The bitcoin price increase has been driven in part by billionaire investor support and the growing fear that the Trump administration's policies could trigger a debt crisis soon. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently stated he plans to 'increase the size of the [bond] buyback', which could be more than $4 billion per issue.
This announcement has revived the 'debasement trade' and led to capital flight from debt and currency markets to other assets, such as decentralized finance. Bitcoin and gold have proven particularly popular, with the bitcoin/gold ratio expanding and bitcoin reasserting its relative leadership.
