Treasury's $1 Trillion Cash Pile Sparks Bitcoin Rally and Market Shift
The US Treasury's cash pile has sparked a significant shift in its response to rising borrowing costs. The department is exploring the use of its roughly $1 trillion cash balance, including about $940 billion in its operating account at the Federal Reserve, to finance expanded bond buybacks.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has hinted that purchases could rise beyond the new $4 billion level, and the Treasury General Account's (TGA) size has increased to roughly $950 billion. This development comes as a response to pressure on long-term borrowing costs, with the 30-year Treasury yield having climbed as high as 5.337% before falling.
The move has significant implications for financial liquidity and markets, including Bitcoin. The cryptocurrency has gained roughly 27% in August, putting it on course for its best August since 2017. Some analysts believe that the prospect of using the TGA would reinforce investor expectations that 'artificial yield caps are coming,' which could put further pressure on the dollar while supporting precious metals.
