Treasury's Bond Buyback Sparks Gold and Bitcoin Rally
Bitcoin and gold prices surged this week in response to a surprise move by the US Treasury Department. On Wednesday, the department announced plans to significantly increase its buybacks of long-term Treasurys, or government debt, aiming to calm bond markets after a sustained sell-off.
The maneuver had an immediate effect, causing a dollar sell-off and leading investors to seek alternative assets. As a result, gold and bitcoin saw significant gains, with gold rising above 2% on Wednesday and bitcoin increasing by over 20% for the week.
President Donald Trump's call for Congress to move quickly on crypto legislation may also have contributed to the surge in Bitcoin prices, as his own holdings are reportedly worth around $1.2 billion.
