Treasury's Expanded Bond Buybacks Could Bolster Risk Assets Including Bitcoin
The US Treasury Department is set to increase its bond buybacks by at least twofold, according to a recent statement. This move could have a positive impact on risk assets like Bitcoin, as it would inject liquidity into the long-term debt market and ease financial conditions.
Bond prices jumped, while yields fell nearly 10 basis points, after the announcement. The Treasury's buyback program allows them to repurchase outstanding government debt before maturity and retire it. This tool is used to improve market liquidity and repay borrowing early.
Somewhat surprisingly, this increase in bond buybacks could also lift Bitcoin prices. Some analysts argue that the measure would provide an additional fundamental tailwind to Bitcoin's existing upward momentum.
