Treasury's Surprise Move Sends Bitcoin, Gold Soaring
Bitcoin and gold experienced a remarkable turnaround last week after weeks of decline. The price of Bitcoin had dropped from nearly $95,000 in January to below $60,000 at the end of June, while gold had fallen to around $4,000. However, on Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury Department announced plans to significantly increase its buybacks of long-term Treasurys, which sent shockwaves through the bond market.
The dollar sold off in response, and investors flocked to alternative assets such as gold and Bitcoin. The price of gold rose over 2% on Wednesday, while Bitcoin jumped more than 20% for the week. The Treasury's actions were seen as a move to calm bond markets, but it also raised concerns about inflationary pressures.
The national debt surpassed $40 trillion on the same day as the Treasury's announcement, adding fuel to the fire of investor anxiety. President Donald Trump, who has been a vocal supporter of the crypto industry, held a cryptocurrency conference at the White House on Wednesday and called for Congress to pass the Clarity Act, which would ease regulations on the industry.
The price of Bitcoin blasted through its upper limit of $67,000 as investors took advantage of the Treasury's actions. Many investors who had shorted Bitcoin were forced to close their positions, adding more upward pressure to the price. By Friday, over $4 billion in bearish crypto positions had been liquidated.
