Trezor Pushes for Self-Custody as Key to True Bitcoin Ownership

The concept of holding one's own Bitcoin has never been more accessible, yet many people are choosing to rely on others to manage their funds. The distinction between owning Bitcoin and having a claim to it is crucial; most individuals who believe they hold Bitcoin actually have an entry in someone else's ledger with the promise of access.

This 'promise' can be withdrawn at any time, as seen during the EU's implementation of new crypto rules. Exchanges were forced to stop offering services to EU users, leaving millions stranded. Withdrawal options were limited and dependent on company decisions, highlighting the vulnerability of relying on third-party custodians.

Trezor, a pioneer in hardware wallets, has been working to promote self-custody as the safer option. Founded 12 years ago, Trezor's mission is to empower individuals with control over their funds by removing counterparty dependency. The first hardware wallet was designed to take private keys off internet-connected devices and onto a dedicated, secure device.

Today, self-custody has become more accessible than ever, but the barrier remains trust. People are being persuaded into relying on exchange-traded funds (ETFs) or other institutional arrangements that offer convenience over control. However, these options come with risks, including exposure to price fluctuations and potential losses.

Trezor is launching its Self-Custody Week initiative to promote awareness about the importance of holding one's own keys. The aim is not to lecture people but to make self-custody more approachable, better understood, and impossible to dismiss as a difficult option.
