Tribunal Orders Repayment of $3,000 in Cryptocurrency Dispute

Share

A British Columbia tribunal has ordered a man to repay $3,000 he was trusted to invest in cryptocurrency after he failed to provide evidence of any investment.

The dispute arose from an informal arrangement called the 'Weekend Club' between two men. One handed over money for the other to invest in a cryptocurrency account, with any gains set aside for weekend outings.

The tribunal found that the respondent had no financial records showing any investment or loss, despite being asked to provide them. The member drew an adverse inference, concluding that the missing evidence counted against the respondent.

The applicant's claim for $2,000 in profit was dismissed because he couldn't show what specific investment he directed. His separate claim for $50 given as a birthday present to the respondent's daughter was also dismissed due to hearsay and unreliable supporting evidence.
