Trillion-Dollar Motives Behind AI Slowdown Proposal
Three prominent figures in the AI industry have proposed slowing down the development of artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure safety and mitigate risks. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, published an essay titled 'We Must Pace the Frontier' calling for a slower pace of progress in AI capabilities. He suggested three stages: embedded outside evaluators, industry coordination on common safety requirements, and international agreements.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman endorsed part of Amodei's proposal, specifically agreeing with the call for embedded outside evaluators. Elon Musk also supported the idea, stating 'Dario is right.' However, Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of Solana, questioned the motives behind this proposal, suggesting that the trillion-dollar market capitalization valuation may be a driving factor.
David Sacks disagreed with the need for industry coordination, arguing that Anthropic and OpenAI could slow down voluntarily without regulatory frameworks. He also raised concerns about product-liability exposure and regulatory capture. The companies involved have not confirmed any financial incentives or motivations behind their support for slower AI development.
