Tron Overtakes Ethereum as Largest USDT Host
Tron has surpassed Ethereum as the largest host of USDT (Tether) stablecoins, reaching $94.27 billion in circulation. This milestone is a significant shift from just a few years ago when Ethereum dominated the market.
The gap between Tron and Ethereum's USDT supply has widened since Q2 2026, according to Messari's State of TRON report. By the end of that quarter, Tron was already hosting $87.9 billion in circulating USDT compared to Ethereum’s $78.7 billion.
USDT accounts for 98.5% of all stablecoins on the Tron network and processed $2.1 trillion in transfers during Q2 alone. Daily transfer volumes frequently exceed $20 billion, fueled by a user base that has grown past 400 million accounts as of late August.
The low transaction fees and high throughput on Tron have made it an attractive option for retail traders, remittance senders, and businesses operating in regions where dollar-denominated digital payments solve a real problem. Tether itself has facilitated this migration by increasingly favoring Tron for large-scale minting since at least 2022.
As a result, more than half of every Tether dollar in existence now lives on the Tron network. This development raises concerns about regulatory attention, particularly given the network's governance structure and association with Justin Sun, who has faced legal scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions.
