Trump Admin Pressures Law Enforcement to Support Controversial Crypto Legislation
The Trump administration is applying pressure to law enforcement groups to support a contentious cryptocurrency bill, despite criticisms that it could be exploited by criminals. The bill, known as the Clarity Act, aims to bring regulatory certainty to the digital currency industry and ensure information sharing about illicit activity with law enforcement.
However, critics argue that the bill allows President Donald Trump to continue benefiting from his own cryptocurrency ventures, including $TRUMP memecoin, which was launched days before he took office. The proposed legislation does not prohibit these earnings, and some lawmakers claim it includes 'loopholes' that leave room for Trump to enter new ventures.
Supporters of the bill, including Faryar Shirzad, chief policy officer for Coinbase, say it would help companies better comply with legal requirements and prevent criminal activity. However, a slate of law enforcement associations has expressed concerns about possible gaps in preventing the use of crypto to finance terrorism, citing reduced transparency and accountability.
