Trump Administration Directs Federal Agencies to Shape Crypto Rules Amid Stalled Legislation
The Trump administration is taking steps to advance its crypto-friendly policies by directing federal agencies to shape rules for the digital asset industry. Federal regulators such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) have been instructed to create regulations that could provide some clarity for cryptocurrency companies in the short term.
However, industry officials and legal experts warn that these rules may not offer lasting certainty, as they can be easily reversed by a future administration. Cryptocurrency companies have spent hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying and campaigning for legislation that would establish clear federal rules for crypto assets.
The Clarity Act, which remains stalled in Congress, would determine which tokens qualify as securities or commodities and which agencies would oversee the sector. Lawmakers now have limited time to reach an agreement on the legislation before a new Congress takes office next year.
