Trump Administration Discusses But Has Not Decided On Accumulating More Bitcoin
U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has not made any decisions on accumulating more Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, despite some discussion about it. When asked at a White House event attended by technology executives and cryptocurrency industry leaders if his administration had plans to accumulate sizable amounts of Bitcoin or other digital assets, Trump replied that he would rely on Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Paul Atkins and the broader policy team for recommendations.
Trump's comments did not announce new U.S. Bitcoin purchases, nor did they provide a timeline for expanding federal cryptocurrency holdings. However, he did mention that accumulating more Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies had been discussed within his administration.
The discussion around Bitcoin accumulation is centered on Trump's March 6, 2025 executive order establishing the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve through asset forfeiture proceedings. The reserve is designed to hold seized Bitcoin and must remain a federal reserve asset, subject to limited legal exceptions. Any further acquisition of Bitcoin would need to be budget neutral and not impose incremental costs on U.S. taxpayers.
