Trump Administration Divided Over Artificial Intelligence Regulation
A proposal to create an artificial intelligence regulator modeled on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) has sparked debate within the Trump administration. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed opposition to this idea during a call with President Donald Trump, arguing that any officials appointed should reflect the president's light-touch approach to AI regulation.
Zuckerberg's concerns were echoed by White House adviser David Sacks, who compared a traditional government regulator for AI to a 'DMV for AI', suggesting it could slow down innovation. Instead, Sacks proposed an industry-led framework that would rely on voluntary standards, similar to the Motion Picture Association.
The debate comes as AI agents become increasingly capable of browsing the internet, operating software, and writing code with limited human supervision. Concerns about cybersecurity and AI systems operating beyond their intended limits have increased pressure on policymakers to establish stronger safeguards.
