Trump Advisers Weigh CLARITY Act Ethics Rules Amid Senate Vote Deadline
President Donald Trump met with his advisers to discuss ethics provisions in the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act, adding uncertainty to negotiations over the U.S. crypto market-structure bill.
The meeting occurred just days before the Senate is scheduled to begin consideration of the legislation on September 15. Democrats have been pushing for restrictions related to Trump's family crypto businesses while his administration oversees the industry's regulatory framework.
The issue has become one of the most difficult obstacles to bipartisan agreement in the bill, which aims to establish clearer federal rules for digital assets and delineate regulatory responsibilities across U.S. agencies. Senator Jim Risch described the legislation as a measure intended to provide clearer policies for digital assets while supporting consumer protection, innovation, and U.S. financial competitiveness.
The Senate Democratic Caucus confirmed that the cloture motion on the CLARITY Act is scheduled to ripen at 2:15 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 15. The timing leaves lawmakers with limited room to resolve the disagreement, making it a critical test of whether senators can reach enough bipartisan support to advance the bill for further consideration.
